Mental Health

It is estimated that 28.8% of the patients attending primary care have common mental health problems of depression or anxiety while 19% have depression alone. Risk factors for mental conditions are complex and include: social and physical environment at work and at home;, family violence; childhood sexual abuse; and high consumption of alcohol and drug abuse. All of these risk factors are compounded by lack of access to treatment and recognition/diagnosis of diseases.

Current health promotion emphasis/messaging:

  • Early detection and treatment of mental illnesses by health professionals
  • To encourage people to seek early counselling and treatment for mental illness
  • .Mental illness can be treated and clients/patients rehabilitated into the community.
