In Malawi, 47% of children under 5 years are stunted with 1.5% severely wasted (acute malnutrition) and 4% wasted. The risk factors include; prevalence of worms (hookworm,); poor hygiene resulting in diarrhoea; poverty leading to food insecurity at community and household levels and poor diet with low intake of iron-rich foods.
Current health promotion emphasis:
- Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued with supplement until second birthday
- Pregnant mothers to eat extra meals as well as eat food from the six food groups.
